Who Gives A Crap review: just a flush in the pan?
Here’s my unfiltered take on whether you should give a crap about Who Gives A Crap (WGAC). I’ll be getting into all the filthy details
I’m Alice.
I’m a nerd that likes to travel.
I’ve been vegan since January 2016, after learning that my meat-loving sister had gone vegan before me (yes, I’m competitive)!
I was an on and off vegetarian before that but I did my time as an omnivore.
Dedicated herbivore until I die now though.
I may have been infected by a mushroom.
I grow animal stem cells in the lab…on fungi!
That’s all you need to know really.
It all started when I quit my rewarding (but incredibly stressful) job as an operations manager at a food waste not for profit in Sheffield.
I chopped all my hair off into what can only be described as an objectively terrible bowl cut, and decided to start afresh.
In 2017, I moved to South Korea to teach English. From my base on Geoje Island, I explored Asia as much as I could but quickly realised that, whilst travelling fed my soul, my job wasn’t exactly stimulating my brain. So I went began my career as a freelance researcher and writer!
I’d travelled extensively before Korea, but this was the first time I’d done so as a vegan.
And it wasn’t long before I realised that online travel resources for vegans were few and far between.
Korea, in particular, was a real challenge – especially before I got to grips with the language (offline Google Translate was a real lifesaver during this period of my life, despite the inordinate amount of time I spent scanning ingredient lists in supermarket aisles). Even once I could decipher what I was reading, finding vegan food in rural Korea (far, far away from Seoul’s incredible bakeries and health food shops) was no easy feat. My diet mostly consisted of rice balls and somaek…
I briefly attempted to make my own vegan yoghurt but after producing nothing but a tangy, curdled soy slop, I accepted my fate and stuck to buying and writing about my vegan finds instead.
And to save you from having to make your own questionable yoghurty soy sludge, I created this blog so you can find plant-based food and drink abroad too!
At the same time, Korea is also where I first fell in love with fitness. With long coastal walks, hiking trails, and a strong culture of movement and routine, I started to build healthier habits. That experience is why this blog also covers vegan fitness and lifestyle, including how to stay active and feel good whilst living out of a suitcase.
I’m back in the UK now, having committed to studying teeny tiny stem cells that might just help the world reduce its reliance on conventional meat.
But I still travel a lot (SO MANY academic conferences), and I continue to share vegan finds from both abroad and closer to home.
I hope that in some small way, I can help you lead your own plant-based adventures.
Happy vegan wanderings!
Alice 🌱 xx

But it may just be full of cool fungi facts…who knows?!
