The best vegan chocolate in the UK

Contents

Chocolate is my weakness.

But, I’m going to be honest, the majority of vegan chocolate that I’ve tried absolutely sucks.

I just can’t stand cheap-tasting dairy milk chocolate imitations. The worst part? They’re not even cheap!

Surprisingly, many big chocolate brands have fallen into this trap, relying on ingredients like rice syrup or flour that impart an artificial flavour and grainy texture.

Luckily, more and more brands in the UK are using high-quality ingredients, such as hazelnut paste, coconut milk or oat milk powder, to create truly exceptional vegan chocolate products.

Anyway, I’ve taken on the arduous task of trying them all (I know, huge sacrifice!) and curated a list of the absolute best vegan chocolate in the UK, from snack bars to luxurious truffles, nuttiest of the nutty to allergen-free, supremely dark chocolate to plant milk and even cocoa-free!

Now go forth and satisfy your cravings!

Many people assume that vegans can only consume dark chocolate but we do have options beyond that. While traditional milk chocolate contains cow’s milk or other animal-derived milk, vegans can enjoy chocolate made with dairy milk alternatives like oat milk powder, almond milk, hazelnut paste and coconut milk.

In addition to their dietary choices, many vegans also prioritise ethical considerations, including social, economic, and environmental practices. This extends to chocolate! Therefore, vegans often prefer chocolate that carries fairtrade certifications or supports direct trade practices, ensuring fair wages, sustainable farming and transparency in the supply chain.

In addition to vegan chocolate being suitable for many people with dietary restrictions or allergies, such as lactose intolerance or milk protein allergies, it’s also the more ethical and environmentally friendly choice.

By purchasing vegan chocolate, we can enjoy a guilt-free indulgence that aligns with our values, promotes animal welfare, supports sustainable agriculture and contributes to a more compassionate and environmentally conscious world.

Hotel Chocolat's Nutmilk Chocolate

It took them 5 years to perfect and my oh my were these worth the wait! Hotel Chocolat created a nutmilk blend like no other, crafted with rich hazelnut paste to achieve the perfect harmony of cocoa and creaminess.

Crunchy truffles, melt-in-the-mouth truffles, delicately sweet truffles, silky smooth nutmilk batons, chocolate bites that ooze luxurious salted caramel…get in my mouth!

2. Best budget-friendly option

Coop GRO's Gianduja Chocolate Bar

Probably my favourite budget-friendly chocolate on the market, Coop has really hit the nail on the head with this one. It doesn’t taste cheap at all and there’s no rice syrup in sight!

It’s 90g worth of chocolate (a decent size) and it cost just £1 last time I checked 😱 quick, go grab yourself a bar before they sell out!

Where to buy

Head into your local Coop or get one delivered with your next Amazon order!

3. Best chocolate truffles

Booja Booja's Award-Winning Selection Vegan Chocolate Truffles

The OGs of organic vegan chocolate truffles, you can’t go wrong with a box of Booja Booja.

I couldn’t choose which flavour was my favourite…I’ve listed their selection box so you can enjoy all of the following:

  • Hazelnut crunch
  • Stem ginger
  • Almond salted caramel
  • Rhubarb & vanilla fool
  • Around midnight espresso

Minimal ingredients, just pure unadulterated bliss.

Where to buy

Booja Booja chocolates used to be limited to independent organic shops and vegan delis (I still recommend buying from these places if possible) but are now more widely available in shops like Holland & Barrett, Waitrose, Coops and Selfridges. Alternatively, you can get it delivered via Amazon!

4. Best hazelnut chocolate spread (vegan Nutella)

Sissini's Vegan Greek Chocolate & Hazelnut Spread

I’m more of a savoury toast kind of person and never really had a fondness for Nutella. So, when I transitioned to a vegan lifestyle, I didn’t really miss it all that much.

However, I know there are folks out there who used to indulge in Nutella straight from the jar, and if you’re one of them, I’ve got a great alternative for you!

Sissini’s Vegan Greek Chocolate & Hazelnut Spread is pretty darn tasty. I’ve personally tried it on pancakes and it did not disappoint.

It comes in a 400g tub and is priced at a wallet-friendly £3.99. What’s more, it’s palm oil-free and, taking a look at the ingredients, it’s safe to say that it’s probably considered healthier than Nutella too.

Where to buy

I’ve only come across this on Amazon.

5. Best on-the-go bars at airports and bus/train/petrol stations:

Ombar's Oat M'lk Chocolate

Delicious, organic, vegan chocolate crafted with premium Ecuadorian cacao and a blend of all-natural, organic ingredients such as unrefined coconut sugar, real fruit and even gut-friendly live cultures! As a passionate advocate for a healthy vegan gut, I’m thrilled to discover a chocolate brand that goes beyond mere indulgence and embraces the well-being of our microbiome.

Ground naked British-grown oats give Ombar’s Oat M’lk chocolate range a luxuriously creamy taste but my favourite flavour has to be the Coco Mylk bar. The Oat M’lk range is the most widely available though!

Where to buy

Ombars are now available in WHSmiths, which means they are quite literally all over the UK! Find them at your nearest bus terminal, airport, train station and even at petrol stations.

You can also buy them from Amazon.

6. Best imitation chocolate (Kinder Bueno, Ferrero Rocher, etc.)

Love Raw's entire range

Miss your favourite conventional chocolate brand?

Love Raw has the perfect solution for those nostalgic cravings. With their innovative creations like the Cre&m Wafer Bars reminiscent of Kinder Buenos and the irresistible Nutty Choc Balls that capture the essence of Ferrero Rocher, Love Raw has mastered the art of crafting incredible dairy milk chocolate alternatives.

My favourites are probably the wafer bars and the peanut butter cups. I haven’t tried their M:lk Choc Peanut Caramel Bar yet but it’s supposed to be even better than Snickers!

Where to buy

All over the place, including Waitrose, Ocado, Tesco, Boots, Asda, Coop, WHSmith, Welcome Break, bp and even at English Heritage sites!

7. Best chocolate for allergy sufferers

NOMO's Caramel Filled Chocolate Bar

Ok ok, so NOMO contains rice syrup, rice starch and rice flour…so I fully admit that this is not the highest quality vegan chocolate on my list. Having said that, the gooey caramel inside each segment definitely makes up for it!

Plus, NOMO chocolates are vegan, easy to find across the UK and they’re free from dairy, gluten, egg and nuts! A great chocolate bar for those with intolerances.

Where to buy

NOMO bars are available in pretty much every supermarket, as well as in petrol stations, Holland & Barrett shops and online at Amazon.

8. Best raw chocolate

Conscious Chocolate's Dark and Smooth Collection

Conscious Chocolate is handmade in the UK in small batches. They use only the finest, most ethically-sourced, raw ingredients and their factory is powered by 100% renewable energy! The entire range is also vegan and free from dairy, soya, refined sugar and gluten.

Conscious Chocolate bars boast robust and intense flavours and are crafted with a high percentage of cocoa. If you’re a true chocolate lover, these raw bars are for you!

Where to buy

I’ve only found Conscious Chocolate online via Amazon or direct from their website.

9. Best chocolate-free chocolate

Caroboo's Creamy Mint Choco Bar

Have you ever heard of chocolate-free chocolate? It may sound perplexing and you’ll be even more confused when you sink your teeth into a bar of Caroboo’s Mint Choco Bar because it really does taste exactly like dairy milk mint chocolate.

So, what’s the secret ingredient? Carob! Caroboo harnesses the natural goodness of carob beans to create their incredible chocolate alternatives. Not only are these bars packed with fibre, minerals and vitamins, but they are also naturally caffeine-free.

But it doesn’t stop there. Carob boasts an impressive array of environmental benefits. Carob trees are naturally resistant to drought and require minimal irrigation compared to cocoa trees. They can thrive in various soil types and even flourish in arid regions, making them a sustainable and resilient crop.

I enjoyed all of the flavours but, as someone who doesn’t usually enjoy mint in chocolate, the creamy mint was my fave…these bars are full of surprises!

Where to buy

Get them delivered from Amazon or buy direct!
