Non-streaky vegan sunscreens to brighten your summer

Contents

It is time ☀️😎 summer hast cometh!

And whoever you are (because UV light doesn’t discriminate), it’s time to slather yourself in sunscreen.

When I first went vegan, finding a decent vegan sunscreen proved rather difficult. If I came across any cruelty-free brands at all, they were thick and greasy…or cost an arm and a leg!

Luckily for us, and for the animals, veganism went viral and ethical suncream is now much easier to find. And cheaper too (well, some of them).

There are still some awful ones out there though! So I’ve rounded up some of my favourites (all tried and tested by myself or members of my wonderful online vegan community) to present to you the best vegan sunscreens that protect your skin, the animals and the planet!

Palm and Pine

There is a tub and bottle of Palm & Pine's vegan sunscreens on the sand. The packaging is aluminium and black in colour.

Palm & Pine is a 100% vegan brand, offering natural sunscreens in plastic-free packaging.

In addition to their Daily SPF30 Lotion, Palm & Pine has an amazing full coverage factor 50 face sunscreen. It has a light mousse-like texture, which is moisturising but not greasy and doesn’t leave a white sheen on your face.

Palm & Pine offers bundle deals if you buy their 30 and 50 sunscreens together!

UpCircle

I’m a big fan of UpCircle, not least because they are a refill company promoting a circular economy!

UpCircle is a family-run brand based in the UK that offers a range of natural, organic, vegan and cruelty-free beauty products made from upcycled ingredients that would otherwise be discarded. Their mission is to promote circular beauty and contribute to a less wasteful world.

Their non-nano zinc oxide suncream is fantastic! In fact, I’m currently wearing it during my road trip in the Ardèche and it’s both protective and lightweight. It’s formulated with upcycled raspberry seeds to defend against free radical damage and moisturises the skin at the same time as providing skin defence against premature ageing caused by UVA.

Plus, the jar is refillable! No more waste 🥳

Fuka Eri

Vegan face sunscreen that doubles up as a tinted moisturiser, Fuka Eri is the holy grail! Designed for those who spend a lot of time outdoors (surfers, skiers, hikers, anyone really), it can be applied to wet, salty or dry skin.

I was so pleased when I tried this plastic-free, zinc sunblock. It makes my face look subtly sun-kissed and golden. At SPF50, it provides plenty of protection. And it’s vegan, waterproof and reef-safe!

Green People

Green People has a variety of sunscreens available and make sure to clearly label which ones are vegan (whilst not tested on animals, the others contain beeswax) and reef-safe. The Edelweiss sunscreen with a tan accelerator (SPF 15) is certified as both!

It’s available in two sizes, including a smaller size that can be conveniently carried in your hand luggage. It’s worth noting, however, that Green People does not have any vegan sunscreens with an SPF higher than 15. So if your skin needs something more protective (like me), then it’s probably worth opting for one of the other best vegan sunscreens on this list.

Omuci

Omuci’s Nothing to Hide has a selection of reef-safe and vegan sunscreens that come in varying levels of SPF (15, 30 and 50).

Unlike many natural mineral sunscreens, Nothing to Hide applies smoothly and does not leave a white residue on the skin. The brand advises against individuals with oily skin using the products though as they contain a significant amount of oils in their ingredients.

Goddess Garden

The OGs of mineral sunscreen, Goddess Garden have been around for a long time. Their natural, cruelty-free, vegan sunscreens come in a range of sizes and application types. For example, they offer a spray sunscreen for easy and even application, a daily suncream for everyday use and mineral SPF50 sticks for extra protection, particularly useful for the delicate cheeks and noses of vegan babies.

Goddess Garden is a pretty awesome brand for sensitive skin and is recommended for those with eczema and acne. But they are slightly greasier and thicker compared to other vegan sunscreens.

Sun Bum

Based in California (where it’s always sunny, so you know their vegan sunscreen has to be good), Sun Bum makes a wide range of sun care products, including sprays, lotions, sticks and lip balms. They even make tanning oils and after-sun care.

Their sunscreens have a coconut smell, which is yummy! Moreover, they’re water resistant and have a non-greasy, smooth application.

But don’t worry, I’ll use the money to fund more useful articles and resources, and of course, to buy more vegan snacks to keep me fueled up. I promise not to blow it all on vegan ice cream…I’ll save some for a cocktail or two. A girl’s gotta eat (and drink)!
